Campus Transportation Options

Berea College offers sustainable transportation resources such as campus bike racks and carpool parking, a campus shuttle system to surrounding areas, and a student-led bike program.

The College has partnered with Enterprise CarShare to replace the Motor Pool.  CarShare vehicles will be on site at the College located where the Motor Pool vehicles were formerly parked. The CarShare vehicles will be accessible 24/7/365 for College business use – these vehicles are not available for personal use.  In order to access the vehicles, employees who plan to use a CarShare vehicle will need to register for an account before making a reservation. Faculty and Staff can register for accounts through their MyBerea. College Staff or Faculty must make all reservations on behalf of Students. Requests from Students will not be accepted.

While it will no longer be necessary to include the Fund, Org, Account and Program in the memo section when making reservations, employees must enter the business purpose of the reservation in this field. We encourage everyone to reserve needed vehicles in advance. If your travel plans change and a reservation has been made, cancellations should be done as soon as is possible on the reservation webpage or mobile app.

The CarShare account will continue to be monitored for business purpose and usage. Misuse of the program by any Staff, Faculty or Student may result in loss of CarShare privileges and/or other disciplinary action.

The vehicles available through CarShare currently consist of 10 Chrysler Pacifica minivans, 3 Toyota Camrys and 2 Ford Transit 15-passenger vans. Beginning July 1, 2023, there will be no charge (daily or mileage) for the use of the CarShare fleet. Drivers are responsible for following all traffic laws. Please be aware it is a state law to wear seatbelts. Kentucky state law also prohibits texting while driving. See other state laws regarding distracted driving.

In partnership with Public Safety, the Office of Sustainability oversees the Berea College Bike Club (BCBC), a student managed program designed to increase Berea College student access to affordable, active transportation through bike rentals. Learn more and apply here.

Office of Sustainability bike services include:

  • Operating a program for students to rent bikes for a small fee.
  • Basic bicycle repair and maintenance service for personal bikes.
  • Refurbishment of abandoned bikes, in partnership with Public Safety, to reduce waste and provide additional active transportation opportunities for students.
  • Installation and maintenance of campus bike repair Fixit stations.

Student Life offers a transportation service for Berea College students via the Student Life Shuttle van.  This 12-passenger van operates during regular hours throughout the week to provide transportation for students to grocery stores, shopping malls, and the movies. The Student Life Shuttle offers trips to Richmond, Lexington, and around Berea on a weekly basis.

The EcoVillage offers its residents a Toyota Prius that can be reserved for personal use. A hybrid car, the Prius combines a gas engine and an emissions-free electric motor. This low-emissions vehicle does not have to be recharged. The Ecovillage is within walking distance of the campus, so the Prius is available only for off-campus needs such as grocery shopping and doctor’s appointments. There is no longer a mileage fee for the use of the Prius. If you are a resident of EcoVillage wanting to reserve the Prius, please click here.

Prius Policies:
  • Driver must have completed Defensive Driving Training through Berea College Public Safety
  • The Prius must be reserved AT LEAST three days in advance.
  • The Prius may only be reserved for 3 hours at a time.
  • The Prius may only be used for errands such as getting groceries or going to important appointments (i.e. doctor or food stamps)
  • The Prius may only go as far as Richmond or Mt. Vernon

Please note that this current policy is under review and subject to change in the 2024-2025 academic year to better serve the needs of modern students.

As a residential college, Berea’s car policy prohibits all freshmen from having cars and limits the number of approved student vehicles and campus parking spaces.  As noted on pp. 69-70 of the Berea College Student Handbook, “College policy is to discourage unnecessary ownership and use of personal vehicles by students. It is also College policy to provide an educational and social situation in which the ownership and use of personal motor vehicles by students is not normally needed. Ecological and environmental effects, loss of open space, costs of parking, and increased traffic hazards associated with a large number of motor vehicles are also factors influencing the College’s policy of restricting student vehicles.”
