Frequently Asked Questions
The main floor of the Hutchins Library, right next to the Reference Desk. If you need to check in for an appointment, please visit our front desk in the back corner of the space, and someone will help you connect with your consultant.
Writing Resources works with nearly all forms of writing, from research papers in general studies courses to nursing papers. More information on which consultant and their special areas can be found in their bios on berea.mywconline.com.
Absolutely. Many of our consultants have experience with creative writing.
No, you do not have to bring in a full draft. Writing Resources helps with every part of the writing process, including understanding an assignment, brainstorming, organizing, planning, and revising. You will have to be an active participant in your consultation, but we are glad to help you get started. Bring your assignment sheet if you have one!
Walk-ins are welcome; however, if all our consultants for that hour are already booked with appointments, you may have to wait or make an appointment for another day.
Appointments can be made by visiting berea.mywconline.com. If you have not created an account with us, you will be prompted to do so (use your berea.edu email) before scheduling an appointment.
Appointments can be canceled and/or rescheduled at any point in time up to an hour before the original consultation by accessing your account at berea.mywconline.com, by emailing us at writingresources@berea.edu, or by calling our office at 859-985-3404.
A typical consultation will last approximately fifty minutes. However, if you need to leave or have received the help you needed, you and your consultant are welcome to wrap up the consultation earlier.
There is no “one” consultation because writing requires many different kinds of tasks, but there are some norms for our consultations. Typically, a front desk staffer or consultant will greet you and help you connect with your consultant. You are welcome to sit anywhere in the space you like. The consultant will ask about your goals for the session, and you’ll decide together how to meet those goals. Depending on what stage of the writing process you are in, you may be asked to try various techniques in writing or brainstorming. Towards the end of the consultation, you’ll review what you did together and make any future plans for the project. If you need a record of your appointment sent to your professor, let your consultant know and provide them with the professor’s name/email.
You should bring a copy of the prompt for the assignment you’re working on, any sources you’ve used for research, your paper draft if you have it, and yourself.
You are welcome to schedule an appointment with the same consultant (or, if you prefer, a different consultant) through berea.mywconline.com. Occasionally, we may have to adjust the person you work with for coverage if your original consultant cannot make their shift. Thanks for understanding!
Our writing consultants can help you in the beginning stages of your resume, so you are welcome to come in for those appointments.
Once you are past the drafting stage, we will often suggest making an additional appointment with the Office of Internships and Career Development (ICD) in order to further polish your resume.
